Dog Rescue

Today while driving down main street in the fair city of Longmont, I saw a little dog running down the middle of the street. Main is a very busy street and I was afraid the dog would get run over. I hit the hazard lights, opened the door, and fortunately, the dog jumped in.
It looks to be a Brussels Griffin, similar to the one in the picture above, only more gray in color. It's a really nice, mellow dog although it doesn't care for my cats.
I took it to my vet to have them scan for a microchip. It doesn't have one, and didn't have a collar. Over the week I'll have to call vets and the Boulder Humane Society to see if anyone reported a missing dog fitting the description. I am not going to put flyers because there are freaks out there. If someone puts up flyers with a picture of this particular dog, we'll be on the lookout for them. My son is currently attending the community college in Longmont to obtain his EMT certification, so he'll be able to watch for flyers and check the classified ads to see if someone is looking for the dog. Until then, I don't mind keeping her. She's really easy-going--other than the growling at the cats part. But even that isn't a real big deal and I think she'll get used to them pretty quickly.
The only thing is, I hope if someone's looking for her we connect quickly, otherwise I'm going to get really attached.

Dialogue

I was so happy with all the great responses I got on the last post. I tend to sometimes hold back on my thoughts and feelings as opposed to observations because it's painful to get cut down for those. Observations are easy because opinions are like assholes and everybody has them. And some people ARE them. Assholes, that is.
I realize that if I am a borderline Aspie, it would explain a lot about why working in a field like health care seems poisonous to me. There's too much stimulation. And here I've been doing it on and off for more than 20 years. Something like being a radio DJ, which I've always dreamed of, might actually be better because most of the time, even though there is public contact, I'd be in my own little world. I've never been able to make people understand that I don't dislike being a caregiver because I hate people--I don't really HATE anybody unless they do something truly heinous--I dislike being a caregiver because of having to always be ON. I never understood it before myself. Maybe this new level of understanding will actually help me to be kinder to myself, and maybe in the long run to open up a little more to others who are like me, rather than to the first person who shows me attention. Such people are often predators. There are vampires, folks, but they aren't immortal undead blood suckers. They are energy drainers who, if allowed in, destroy one's self esteem and leave them with just a shell. I am now working on shutting out the energy vampires and being more discerning--and eventually more open--to the good people.

Asperger-ish?

I took this test to determine the possibility that my discomfort in social situations and inability to interact with people in a socially adept way may indicate Asperger's syndrome.
I scored a 29. According to their scale:
Average woman scores 15. Average female scientist scores 17. Average man scores 18. Average male scientist scores 19. Average computer scientist of either sex scores 21. Average mathematician scores 24.
Scores over 32 indicate possible Asperger's or high functioning autism.
I am not saying that I am a genius by any means, but I actually did a test to see if I could get into Mensa, and I can (in spite of my incredibly shitty understanding of math.) I did not join, but it was interesting to know that I could, because I took the test as a lark. I was actually judged as being borderline retarded because of my poor scoring on the Ravens test (a type of IQ test that determines pattern recognition abilities) when I was twelve years old. What I learned was that I am not in fact retarded (except socially, evidently) but I am somewhat dyslexic. This surprised me because I am better than average at spelling, but I do have to triple check any number to make sure that I have it correct.
I may not have Asperger's syndrome, but the test that I took does reflect that I have a terrible ability to mesh with normal society, because I don't think like "normal" people do. I'm not antisocial but I am somewhat asocial. I don't care a thing for being fashionable or looking or acting like everyone else. I notice what people look like and am in fact fascinated by facial features, different hair and skin colors, and figuring out what a person's heritage may be based on these factors. I also started noticing people who might have disorders in their genotype based on its expression their phenotype. For instance, you may enjoy this essay on Marfan Syndrome, a genetic mutation on the 15th chromosome which interferes with the production of fibrillin.
There's an old song by Rod Stewart, the main line of which is "she's just a little misunderstood, that's all."
People do tend to misunderstand my intentions. They get angry at the way I put things under a microscope, yet get angry at the way I find it impossible to categorize things in the same way that they do. Other women want to talk about how "hot" guys are. I may know if a guy is attractive to me, though my perceptions of attractive tend to be radically different from other people's. But I wouldn't know "hot" from the proper measurements to make nitroglycerin. I will not feel "hot" for somebody unless I have gotten to know something about him and there is reason to. To me, "hot" is a feeling, not an arbitrary attribute. I could go on all day about why certain facial features may or may not make a person attractive given another person's perspective. But is he hot? I don't know. That's subjective. Is he "hot" to you? Fine, that's how you feel. Does it really matter whether or not I do? I don't know the guy. I don't really feel it is right of me to pass such a value judgment on him.
It's this sort of thing that tends to alienate me from the crowd. I am not willing to pass a value judgment on another person based on his or her physical appearance. Some of the ugliest people are packaged in technically pretty wrappings, and some of the most beautiful people have external packages that may be a little the worse for wear. I tend to prefer the ones who are a little rough around the edges externally but beautiful inside to the ones who are considered beautiful outside but either have nothing on the inside, or worse, have nothing but ugliness there. Getting to know some people is like unwrapping a pretty box filled with cockroaches and centipedes. It is very traumatic and destructive.
One of my problems is that whenever a connection is severed, I tend to think about it obsessively to the point that my productivity is compromised. I am not sure if this is a feature of my OCD, a feature of my borderline personality disorder, if I actually have a degree of Asperger's, or a combination of the three. A lot of these disorders express co-morbidly. There may be overlapping features.
I may be hard to figure--hell, I've really never figured myself out. But I do want to have friends. I'm very lonely. I may be incapable of being a social butterfly, but I'd love it if someone understood me a little. I hate looking in my email and finding nothing but fucking penny stock picks and advertisements. I wish that sometimes I'd get an email from a person.
I hope that maybe someone reading this will understand me just a little.

Heidi Montag Wants Huge Breast Implants OUT

I am going to try really, really hard not to be snarky, because I really, really cannot stand this woman. However, I will try to let compassion rule and say that I think that she very much needs to get counseling to discern the reason why she would want to have implants of such a ridiculous size in the first place. I also think that it's reprehensible that plastic surgeons agree to such extreme modifications.

I once had a co-worker who was quite literally flat-chested. She had surgery to increase her bust to between a full B to small C cup. I could understand that, although I saw nothing wrong with her before. But what Heidi Montag and people like her have done to themselves, having outlandishly large implants placed in their bodies, is quite literally not a sane action. She obviously has serious body image issues or she never would have requested such drastic surgery.

The New, Atypical College Student: NPR Report

It's long past time for schools to reshape their curricula to work with the lives of the ever-increasing numbers of non-traditional students. Many schools do offer classes at various times, as well as online class options. For those who have never taken an online class, it is NOT easier, although it does offer the option of doing the classwork at odd hours and the convenience of not having to go to a classroom. I have, in fact, found that the tests in online classes are harder. Plus if you are an auditory learner, such a format would be terrible for you.

My own experience with inflexible curriculum hell concerns the nursing program that I am involved with. Many of the classes have no afternoon or evening option, and the clinical shifts have no afternoon option. I can understand not having a night shift option as the night shift is an odd beast (note that I did not say easier.) But for someone who works night shift on their regular job (as I do) doing a day shift clinical is pure hell. Having an evening shift option would be preferable.

The difficulties I am experiencing in completing the nursing certification seem to be pretty ubiquitous. If there is indeed a nursing shortage, doesn't it stand to reason that schools (and the federal funding sources) would want to make obtaining a certification more feasible?

I don't even have room to discuss financial aid gripes--which are many.

An Ode to Black Women and a Fair, Firm Message to ALL Others

I can't say I know how it feels to live as a black woman because I am white and thus my saying such a thing would be hypocritical. I can say that from reading your words I feel and understand your pain and outrage.

I do think that there is a negative trend concerning women regardless of race. Those who stand up for our right to be treated as human rather than allowing ourselves to be sexualized, those of us who demand to be treated with respect and equality, are seen as being too demanding, too angry, and having standards that are too high. As if we should be pleased at being objectified and treated as second class citizens.

I know that wasn't the major point of your article but it really resonated with me.

Women of all races need to stand up for one another. I hope you will keep speaking the truth even though I am sure you will encounter detractors.

The Syfy Channel: Dumbing Down and Crapping Up

An article on the Cracked website explains why the Sci Fi channel changed their name from Sci Fi to the far sillier Syfy. Which, as one commenter said, should be pronounced Siffy. The most informative section reads thus:

In 2009, Sci-fi renamed itself as Syfy. The following quotes were made by Syfy channel owners about it (bold type added for emphasis):
"We'll get the heritage and the track record of success, and we'll build off of that to build a broader, more open and accessible and relatable and human-friendly brand."- Dave Howe, President of Syfy
"The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular...We spent a lot of time in the '90s trying to distance the network from science fiction, which is largely why it's called Sci Fi."- Tim Brooks, founder of Sci-Fi
So, between the President and founder, we learn a few things:
1. They are happy that people are watching and that they are successful
2. They do not consider the people who watch their channel human
3. They made a science fiction channel in an effort to separate themselves from science fiction, as science fiction fans are antisocial boys in their basements with video games and 'stuff'. Perhaps this explains music television?
4. They're willing to rewrite their own history.

So, from what yours truly can gather, they had to dumb down their content and Hipsterize their name to appeal to "humans" because nerds aren't human. Also, nerds are all emotionally disturbed adolescent male virgins living in their mom's basement.
As a 45 year old female nerd who has my own basement, who was married for 11 years, and who has a child (the logical conclusion being that I did procreate at some point) I beg to differ. No one has yet proved that I'm not human, and I preferred the old Sci Fi format. And I find the name "Syfy" to be not charming but annoying. Just like most hipster stuff. Admissibly I do find some of their originally bad content good for an amusing waste of time occasionally, but I'd prefer something of at least questionably redeeming value during an average viewing day.

I Can't Make This Shit Up

Yes, Play-Doh perfume. Don't believe me? Look here.

They sell that Demeter perfume at Wild Oats natural foods. They also have one in the appalling--er--appealing scent of "Funeral Home." I'm not sure if I'm supposed to find the cloying scent of lilies combined with the distinctive odor of embalming fluid somehow comforting, or if when I wear this scent I'll draw to me the ghoul of my dreams. Seriously, I do not wish to be approached by a guy who is interested in me because I smell like a funeral parlor.

Sara Rue's Jenny Craig Commercial: 50 Pounds Heavier I Didn't Want To Leave The House (VIDEO)

The multibillion dollar diet industry has us all by the short hairs. It's sad when people get into the mindset (I am also guilty of this) of "until I see a certain number on the scale, I can't pursue my dreams." What a crock!

If no-one has ever seen the Twilight Zone episode "Number Twelve Looks Just Like You," it's worth a look. A world where everybody looks the same is a very boring one. I despise the Hollywood standard, which gives us nothing but Botoxed faces, fake boobs, and skinny manikins. A lot of the time I prefer watching foreign films because there is more diversity in the way people look--just like in the real world.

A decision to lose weight is a personal one. And personally, I don't like compliments based on my appearance other than perhaps a generic "you look nice today." I look how I look. It's meaningless. The only compliments that are worth anything to me are those based on my accomplishments. I suppose it could be argued that getting in shape is an "accomplishment," but I see it as more a personal thing.

Anyway, we shouldn't be judging one another based on looks but on how we treat one another and the world around us.

Nancy Dolman Dead: Martin Short's Wife Dies

In fact, we all produce abnormal cells that are usually trapped and destroyed by our immune systems. But sometimes one gets through and manages to duplicate, and that's when you have trouble. Most cells are programmed to die eventually, but cancer cells are literally immortal.

One of my great uncles died from prostate cancer. After the first round of treatment when it reappeared, he didn't want to go through chemotherapy again. He said to us "this too is nature," meaning the cancer. He was a good man--I still miss him.

Jenna Jameson: Celebrities LIE About Sex Tape Victimization

A commenter stated her opinion that Jenna Jameson was just jealous and that Kim Kardashian is "the Queen Bee." And that Kim somehow provided "diversity" in her sex tape.

The Cheesemeister pondered: Honestly--Kim Kardashian is the Queen Bee of what? Having rich parents so she never had to work a day in her life and developing no discernible talent or skill? Having Botoxed her robot-looking face? I'm not sure what she is the "Queen Bee" of, exactly.

As for diversity, Jenna and Kim both look like they're made out of plastic. So I'm not sure where this "diversity" comes into play.

Laurence Fishburne Secretly Footing Montana's Legal Bills In Violent Assault Case

My feeling is that this is a very sick young woman. I'm not saying this to be snide or mean, nor from some holier than thou position. My own bipolar disorder was misdiagnosed until I was nearly 40, because type II bipolar disorder presents with hypomanias rather than full manias. While I never considered a career in porn nor was I promiscuous, I would get involved with (and obsessed with) men who were extremely bad for me and make inane, self-destructive decisions. As I am not a psychologist and have not spoken to Ms. Fishburne personally I can't say for sure that she has bipolar disorder, but many of her statements and actions lead me to believe that she does have some sort of psychiatric dysfunction.

People on the whole still tend to see mental illness as somehow less worthy of concern than physical illness, and see those who suffer from it as less intelligent or even less human. Thus, those who need help and their families are often ashamed to seek treatment.

I hope that this young woman gets treatment for her very real psychiatric issues before it's too late for her. Untreated bipolar disorder, for instance, has a strikingly high rate of attempted suicide.

How to Stop Hiding and Reclaim Our Lives

An excellent piece and just what I needed to read. Not your fault that I cringed at the part about the hiding from commitment--I literally and genuinely do not want that sort of commitment. I have been celibate for 12 years and plan to remain that way for life. I have bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder and romantic connections are extremely unhealthy for me. However, what I would like to change is my place in life. I am a caregiver and a very unhappy one. The stuff I love is all artistic--writing, acting, art. But on and off since 1988 I have worked in long term care facilities and am even involved in a nursing certification program even though I hate the idea of working as a caregiver for the rest of my life. I have no idea how to make the transition. I submit short stories to anthologies for charity and I did at one point self-publish a book, which I later pulled from circulation. I'm nearly 50 years old and this is a miserable place to be. I appreciate this piece and the non-blaming style in which you wrote it. Sometimes such articles tend to be acerbic, but yours was not. I hope to read more from you in the future.

Anna Paquin & Stephen Moyer Get Married

Not that my opinion matters one damn bit, but they might have a better chance of lasting than some couples because their relationship has survived the initial infatuation period. A lot of the time when the initial "spark" cools off, people drift away from each other, particularly if they are the type of individual that becomes bored if things don't have that feeling of newness. I tend to be real cynical about the staying power of the relationships of couples in the entertainment business, but they seem more sensible than a lot of show biz types, and I hope it works out for them.

Anna Paquin & Stephen Moyer Get Married

Nooo...not all women. I don't think being bi/lesbian is "gross" or such, I'm just neutral on the subject. I have never had the desire to touch or kiss another woman. However, I fully support same sex marriage and equality of people of all sexual orientations.

I hope I didn't come off as attacking you--I guess I just tire of all the people (men, mostly) who are so fond of saying that ALL women are bisexual. I suppose all PEOPLE are actually bisexual to a greater or lesser degree--which would mean that all MEN are bisexual too, guys.

Also, most of the women I've known aren't soft and sweet. They're bitchy, evil, back-stabbing wenches. That's not exactly going to be a temptation in any case.

I think the reason she made such a "big deal" about her own sexual preference is that she was trying to be supportive of others who might be struggling with their own sexuality. I doubt that she meant for it to become the issue that others made it out to be.

Courtney Love Has Twitter Freak Out Over Daughter Frances Bean's 18th Birthday

I just hope that this young lady is able to get around the terrible addiction problems that plagued both of her parents. Certain people's brains seem to be wired for addiction and one has to make a conscious effort not to fall victim to it. Mood disorders are also hereditary and both of her parents evidently had these as well. Kurt seemed like a gentle, down to earth guy who was sadly overwhelmed by his physical (stomach pain) and emotional/psychological issues. I don't think that Courtney is a bad person at heart. She obviously has serious emotional/psychological issues herself. Evidently she struggles with addiction and she appears to have borderline personality disorder. Until she works on controlling the negative actions inherent to these problems, she will never be able to repair her relationship with her daughter.

Overall, who cares? Some PEOPLE go for people half their age to validate to themselves that they are still attractive. Sometimes people just happen to become attracted to someone outside their age group and the feeling is mutual. As for the comments about the younger guy getting "the short end of the stick" looks-wise, the same could be said for a younger woman with an older man--if you are so shallow as to think only people in their twenties are attractive. And, I'll warrant that the guys making these comments are no great shakes themselves. If they were truly secure about their own appearance, they wouldn't be feeling the need to rag on other people.

Dr. Frank Ryan Dead: Heidi Montag's Plastic Surgeon Dies In Car Crash At Age 50

Unfortunately I had zero respect for the guy, as I have zero respect for anybody that installs ridiculous silicone melons into people's chests. Reconstructive surgery is one thing, as is giving a little boost to someone who doesn't have much in the chest department and wants a little more. But 44DD or whatever she ended up with? As well as the ass ton of other surgery she got? Ridiculous. This man was only thinking of his wallet, not of his patient's well being.

She is probably an intelligent young lady, likely she even has a good soul. But these things will be pushed aside for pursuing only things based on her physical appearance, and heaven forbid her looks should fade or she should put on weight. She is being set up for a very dysfunctional relationship with life. Carl Paladino: Ebenezer Scrooge's Descendant

"Are there no prisons, are there no poor houses?"
That would be Ebenezer Scrooge from the famous Charles Dickens tale, A Christmas Carol. And what this man is proposing sounds a lot like he and the Scrooge at the beginning of the tale would be very much in agreement.
Something does need to be done so that there are fewer people on welfare. This is not it.
I can only speak from my own perspective, but having lived in a marginalized situation for all of my adult life, I can say that most people who end up on welfare are not lazy. Some are undereducated. Some made poor decisions earlier in their lives. And many end up marginalized due to health conditions, both physical and mental.
As a person who lives with a psychiatric illness that was misdiagnosed until I was nearly 40 years old, I can say that many people in impoverished and marginalized conditions do suffer from untreated or undertreated mental illness. Once I learned what was really wrong with me I was able to make some changes, but now that I am closing in on 50, I find it is very late in the game and my life could have been so much better.
Diagnosing and treating physical and mental illness in welfare recipients could go a long way to insuring that there would be fewer of them.
But some might find prisons and poor houses to be easier. Out of sight out of mind.

Strippers...really. They had to seek out the viewpoint of strippers, because...?

It would be one thing if they were asking people on the street and one of them happened to be a stripper. But it seems peculiar to me to deliberately seek out the viewpoint of strippers on an issue such as this. It would have made more sense to seek the viewpoint of law enforcement, firefighters, religious leaders of whatever domination--but strippers?
The only reason I can think of that people in this profession were chosen was because "sex sells."

Obsession with Youth is Sad

TV anchorman Anderson Cooper has been offered a million dollars to test a supplement that would supposedly reverse his prematurely gray hair.
Our youth-obsessed culture is ridiculous. I would much rather see a person who has aged naturally than the Botoxed manikins of Hollywood. While it's up to the individual if they want to color their hair, and while there's nothing wrong with taking this pill as long as there are no negative side effects, there is also nothing wrong with gray hair. In fact, I used to dye my hair because I disliked the natural color, but once it became mostly gray, I quit dyeing it. I'm 45 and my hair is mostly gray. It causes some young restaurant hostesses to present me with the senior menu because everyone believes that gray=old, regardless of my relatively line-free face, but I don't care. I actually feel much freer with my gray hair and, in fact, I think that it looks better. Plus, my hair is much healthier for the fact that I'm not dyeing it any more.

Kill 'Em All

Oh joy, an evil creepy doll
Where are all the friends who used to talk to me
All they ever told me was good news
(Alan Parsons Project--breakdown)

I really hate the human race
I'm sick and tired of life and disappointed as hell in myself
This morning was spent being the victim of a fucking troll. Yes, in my quest to do the right thing, I actually fell for what this turd was doing. Oh, and by the way, fuck you, Facebook. If someone posts a picture of bare ass and even one person reports it, that picture is gone. If someone posts a gratuitious picture of animal cruelty, it takes thousands of people and many, many days and still nothing is done about it. Fuck you, Facebook. You turds suck.
The troll was posting pictures of dead cats on a pro-cats page.
I fell for his bullshit that he was the one killing them until he started saying crap like "it's best when you stuff them in a jar and fuck the jar" and "one day I want to kill a baby."
I was so convinced that I contacted the Australian authorities. Because something the shithead said made it apparent that he was in Australia.
No, he's just another turd finding sick pictures of dead animals from the myriad of sick fucks on the internet and using them. He is a useless waste of oxygen. And you know what I think? I think that such wastes of oxygen, along with those who commit actual crimes of animal and human cruelty--I'm not talking about ignorance leading to animal negligence but about deliberate, vicious cruelty--should have a bullet through the head. No trial, just kill the piece of shit. They serve no useful purpose. I'm sick of trying to have love for my fellow human. The human race has spawned way too many of these rejects. I am filled with hate and want them to all die horribly. If this makes me evil, then I am evil. I really don't care what anybody thinks. My soul feels as empty and angry as Creepy Doll's eyes.
Whenever I try to do anything good I just end up looking stupid.
I don't believe in the possibility that I will ever accomplish anything of worth any more. I am a loser and a washout. Once nothing is depending on me any more there is no reason to continue living.
My son just wants to get away from here and I don't blame him. He still needs my help to a degree and is trying to help me. But it's no good, any of it.
I'm a dismal failure. Every time I try to do anything worthwhile, I just fail.
I don't even have anyone who reads my stupid blog blathering any more or cares at all.
If you are an Internet troll reading this you are even more worthless than I am and should go kill yourself now.

Sometimes I just really loathe the human race.

Hoping for visions of frozen zombies to dance through my head so I can finish my story with all the speed of a one legged horse going uphill

The glass tit is operational again. I was without it for two days and got along fine. Need to consider ditching TV permanently.

Political Divisions

I kind of hate politics across the board but it seems to me the divisions between the so called liberals and conservatives have gotten worse in recent years. As well, both sides tend to campaign based on making their opponent look bad rather than making themselves look good, maybe because there's nothing good to be said about any of them.
I can't stand the ultra-conservative side, who tend to drag fundamentalist Christianist beliefs into everything, opposing same sex marriage because according to their interpretation of their (heavily edited) Buy-bull, "homosexuality is a sin." Some of them oppose abortion even in cases of rape and incest, and cry that anyone who is pro choice is "pro abortion." I am pro-choice, but I actually dislike the idea of abortion. However, I believe that it must remain legal and should be a safe procedure. There are ethical concerns and there need to be strict controls, both to allow women to receive full, unbiased information regarding their reproductive options and to protect viable fetuses from potentially unethically performed, later term abortions.
As to the candidates, the current reigning queen of the Conservatives, Sarah Palin, is a fucking idiot, and if she were elected to the U.S. presidency in 2012 I would have no choice but to believe that the Mayan doomsday prophecy was true. But don't take my word for it. Click the link to read some full-on Palin wisdumb.
On the other hand, I am massively disappointed in the reigning Liberal king Barack Obama, whom I helped put in office. Not because he didn't magically fix the economy, but because he is so busy trying to make the right wing like him that he is forgetting the promises he made to the people who put him in office. How about repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell--NOW! Also, he wasn't very quick on actually going to visit the Gulf Spill site. Disappointed, Mr. Obama. Very disappointed indeed.
Politics stinks. Period.

Does it always have to suck hard?

Having me one of those days where if I didn't think my son still needed my help and I didn't have all these critters that need me I'd find me a gun and make it done. I get really tired of feeling like a worthless piece of shit that the very Universe loathes.

Cheesemeister and Crackers: True Blood Swings Both Ways http://ping.fm/OZYcq

True Blood Swings Both Ways

I appreciate that True Blood doesn't pander to the "female bisexuality is hot, male bisexuality is gross" double standard. It's all okay.
I've known more than one person--women included--who will be very derogatory when speaking of gay men but say that it's okay for women to make out with other women. I call them on it. Why is it okay for women but not for men? That's ridiculous!
I'm straight and have no desire to make out with a woman, but a bisexual or lesbian woman isn't "gross" in my eyes. That's just how they roll. I don't understand why anyone's sexuality is a big deal, so long as they aren't molesting children or animals.

I even saw a post from someone on the fan page for True Blood's openly gay character Lafayette Reynolds saying that they didn't want to see Lafayette making out with another guy. Really? I think you'll be disappointed then. The character is gay. G-A-Y. He likes other guys.
Seriously...sometimes people just make me scratch my head.
Lafayette is my very favorite character on True Blood, which is why I named this cute little guy after him. One of my rescue kittehs.

Stephen Moyer in Playboy: Talks Anna Paquin's Bisexuality, Vampire Sex

It's sad how many people focus on her sexual preference rather than on her skill as an actress. She's a person. She's bisexual. As we said back in the day, "big whoop."

Don't even get me started on the whole "ultimate man's fantasy" to be with two women thing. YAWN! I believe there are plenty of porn sites devoted to that.

If I were her I'd be wondering how wise it was to open up about my sexual preferences given the inevitable adolescent reactions of a number of people. She was trying to convey to people who might know her as an actress that it's okay to be who you are and there's nothing wrong with being bisexual. Instead of it being no big deal, she gets "THAT'S HAWT!"

We really haven't come a long way, baby.

Why We Need to Talk About Death and Dying

I work with the elderly. People often take a horrifically long time to die, though it's clear that nothing can be done for them. At 88 years old, my paternal grandmother was diagnosed with leukemia (though the increase in white blood cells was probably a response to the other things that were going on in her body) and the doctors aggressively pushed for chemotherapy. She refused. She said that at 88 she was not going through chemotherapy. She had horrible osteoporosis and could not sit up straight. She eventually was diagnosed with breast cancer, which metastasized over the course of a few years to her liver. But the cancer is not what killed her. The fact that her spine was so curved that it compressed her lungs so she could never take a full breath caused her to have several bouts of pneumonia each year. It was the pneumonia that killed her.

It always seemed insane to me that rather than discussing the options in an objective fashion, the doctors' first thought was to engage in aggressive chemotherapy for a severely disabled 88 year old. I think this is because they don't want the failure of death on their record, even if the person is coming close to that mark anyway.

Are You "Formerly Hot"?

This was an enjoyable read. Personally I've always thought "hotness" in either men or women to be a superficial quality, but then again, I never had it. I was the party animal that would drink, smoke, or pop anything presented to me. I don't think I was ever cool, and I was probably more stupid than daring. But sometimes I miss being (or seeming to be) that devil-may-care kind of real wild child. I did have people talking--mostly because I think I scared them to death. Looking back on it I craved something that I never was able to find--love and acceptance. I was acting out to get something impossible.

Pablo Pineda Interview http://ping.fm/1P708

Misplaced Puritanism

This comment was a response to this article, detailing how a woman was told to leave a store because she was nursing her baby in the store.
As an American citizen, I feel the need to say that Americans are retarded when it comes to breasts. We, as a society, sexualize the breast, but when it is utilized for its natural, intended purpose--feeding an infant--people suddenly act like purity raped at having been exposed to a bare breast. There's something ass-backwards about this attitude.

Nursing advocate Kristine Lauria's ten-year-old son, who was with her when she went to the store to discuss the incident with the manager, had this to say:
"I don't think people should go in the bathroom to breastfeed," Alessandro said. "It's like me going into the bathroom to eat a burrito. It just doesn't feel right."
This kid has more going on upstairs than a lot of adults. He has the right attitude. With a new generation of enlightened youth, maybe there is hope. Two thumbs up to Alessandro and his sensible thoughts!

Is spanking okay?

This is my response to a poll about corporal punishment on the "Sodahead" website.

It is not okay to beat a child. It is not okay to use an object. But sometimes an open hand on the booty is what is needed. One does not have to hit at all hard to make the point. I can count on one hand the number of times I spanked my son. One time he ran out into a busy parking lot. The other times he had been warned to stop doing something either potentially dangerous or very annoying and continued to do so. Again, hard spanking, beating, or using objects is not necessary, but a firm swat on the backside is sometimes the most effective method of discipline when a child is misbehaving.

I Am the Wal Mart

You Are Walmart

You think people who don't shop at Walmart are totally crazy. Walmart is always your first (and sometimes your only) stop.

Everything is so inexpensive there that you're really throwing your money away if you shop any place else.

You like the convenience of being able to get all the items on your list at one store, at any time of day.

So what if the lines are long and the aisles are messy? Shopping at Walmart is an adventure that doesn't tax your wallet!

No, I don't think people are crazy for not shopping at Wal Mart. Sometimes its the only place I can afford to shop and it's open 24 hours, so my ethical concerns tend to go out the window when the wallet speaks.
The aisles at our Wal Mart are actually not messy. They keep it pretty nice.

Energy never ceases. I have been at the bedside of dying people. There is "something" that departs when they die. I can't explain it better than that, but as someone who has dealt with the elderly and the dying for more than 20 years, I have sensed this energy more than once. I certainly can't explain it, but there it is.

I get sick of the disparaging from the two polar opposites of the religious extremist and nonbeliever extremist camps myself. Really, they don't know any better than we do. I like your thoughts better than theirs.

Keep Dog Fighter Behind Bars

David Tant was convicted on charges of dog fighting in South Carolina and sentenced to 30 years. 6 years into his sentence, he is up for parole. Please go to this site and let it be known that you do not approve of allowing Mr. Tant off so easily.

Here is what I stated in my letter to the South Carolina Department of Corrections:
Please do not parole Mr. Tant this early in his sentence. To do so makes a mockery of the violent crime he committed. Dog fighting is not a victimless offense. The animals utilized in this blood sport are treated in a brutal fashion, being forced to fight to the death. Mr. Tant has no regard for the lives of the animals he brutalized. Those who treat animals in such a horrific fashion often go on to offend against people as well.
Making Mr. Tant serve at least the majority of his sentence will also send a message to other dog fighters that their heinous behavior will not be tolerated.
Please do not let this individual off so easily.

How Did Grief Get an Expiration Date?

Some people are just callous and shallow. One friend lost her very beloved son to an illness that ended up making him go septic six months ago and people have the audacity to say to her "you should be getting over this by now." Another friend lost her son in a motorcycle accident and the DAY after it happened, one of her co-workers had the audacity to say "are you STILL crying?" I swear I'd like to slap these ignorant people with a metal glove.

Cheesemeister and Crackers: Sick Piece of Shit Marinates Cat (Cat rescued) http://ping.fm/aBmeo

Demon Spawn's Mother Needs Discipline

Sometimes the shit you read is completely unbelievable. A five year old child brutally attacked his disabled grandmother while her daughter sat by and did nothing. Read on at The Dreamin' Demon, which is a crime reporting site that tells it like it is.

Here is my response, and a rather humiliating true confession.

Elder abuse is a more common problem than most people realize. This child needs one whole hell of a lot of psychological work. It sounds like he's a sociopath already. I once dealt with a child who was extremely angry and acting out after his father died, but he didn't go to these extremes. Unfortunately I was a dumb seventeen year old and my brother was a dumb thirteen year old and we overdisciplined him after he got in the middle of our homework and threw it all over, then tried to hit us. (We were babysitting for him at the time.) I swatted him hard on the butt and my brother grabbed his arm and made him go to his room. Not cool, but even with that douchebag move, we were a far cry from most of the assholes one reads about here who beat kids to near death or even to death. We got a talking to, the kid got a talking to, we understood what we'd done wrong and never did it again. I've always regretted what we did in that situation.
Seriously, in the situation you described, the one most at fault is the daughter. Who as another commenter pointed out, is probably also abusing her mother. She is as well abusing her son, if not corporally, than by neglect.

Just piled up a bunch of pillows to hopefully support my rotten shoulders better. I wish I could afford one of those nifty adjustable beds.

The shelter lied to me about this animal. It is not a cat. It is a cat-pig hybrid that is always trying to steal bites of my food!

Cheesemeister and Crackers: Diesel: Jeans for the Stupid http://ping.fm/k8rHe

Diesel: Jeans for the Stupid

Diesel Jeans  have an ongoing campaign, the motto of which is "Be Stupid." What this tells me is that only stupid people wear Diesel Jeans, and/or that hipsters are stupid. It's cool to be stupid, and only unhip, uncool people would want to be seen as smart.

Wow. Fortunately I'm not a hipster, or my head might explode from the resulting contradiction coming from the need to buy the latest hipster clothing and the converse desire to hurl when I see these ads. If anything, they would drive me away from purchasing these jeans rather than towards that decision. Of course these jeans are probably outlandishly overpriced, which would lead me to make a more sensible purchase in the first place.
These ads are seriously idiotic, and anyone who would want to emulate what is depicted in them is a serious idiot.

One part arthritis plus two parts injury plus three parts fibromyalgia equals one very painful upper torso.

The Hell of Panic Attacks

An online friend's daughter is going through severe panic attacks and could use some kind support.

I wrote this and am sharing it here in case it might be of use to someone who is going through this kind of ordeal. There is no hell quite like the hell of panic attacks. Those of you who have never had one can consider yourself fortunate.
I'm sorry your daughter's going through this. At the time that I was sexually assaulted, I was also bipolar but didn't know it. I went through a similar thing. The attack triggered constant, ongoing panic.  I would have panic attacks on and off for about 5 hours a day. I have paradoxical reactions to most medications. Most anti-anxiety meds actually backfire on me in a serious way.  I took tons of the anti-anxiety herb Kava Kava, which actually isn't recommended because of its potential to impact the liver at high doses.  5 HTP might help and it is readily avialiable, but its actions are more subtle.  For me this debilitating cycle of panic went on for about  a year. Then the times between panic attacks became longer and longer.
In 2002, when my paternal grandmother died, I began experiencing panic attacks again. Again the doctors tried medications but they only made things worse. The only thing that helped was biofeedback.  I learned to breathe differently and a variety of techniques to refocus my mind. The only time that this hasn't helped was when I started having panic attacks due to the fact that my doctor raised my dose of Levothyroxine from .25 mg to .75 mg, and blamed the resulting high blood pressure on the fact that I'm a large person instead of looking at my medications. It turns out that I can't tolerate thyroid medication either. It created an artificial state of hyperthyroidism and took three months to entirely clear my system.

I don't know if anything I've told you here might be useful. I hope it might. Outside of asthma attacks, panic attacks are, in my opinion, the absolute worst thing to go through.

Am going to have to scrape up some $ for massage. Refuse to take prescription pain killers tho my shoulder is in prescription strength pain.

Sick Piece of Shit Marinates Cat (Cat rescued)

Why was this scumwad released? http://ping.fm/8ywX7

Here is my comment.

Wow, that fucker straight up looks like Satan's brother. Seriously, I'm glad the cat is okay. Can't believe this sicko was released, though. Animal cruelty laws are a joke. It's bad enough what is done to the animals sometimes, but torturing animals is also a red flag. It has proven out that many serial killers started their careers torturing animals.

Here is the cat, safe and sound, luckily.

With Friends Like These--When Do You Forgive and Forget?

Unlike you, I don't feel I have more potential for friendships as I've gotten older. Being stuck at work or doing something connected to work, the potential is far less. Most of the friends I have are long distance friends. The only friendship I ever deliberately ended was one where said friend literally had a mental breakdown, started accusing me of being the reason her store was failing, and started sending bizarre, insulting messages to my house that she had made using cut out words and letters from magazines. This was a friendship of 18 years. It was very sad to me that it had to end this way.

I think some people enter friendships the way they enter relationships. It's only "fun" while it's in the infatuation stage. Once the infatuation dies, they move on. They are seeking excitement rather than commitment. I do not want either a romantic partner or a platonic friend who is like this.

Take Back the Fat

A response to a post at Fierce, Freethinking Fatties about reclaiming the word "fat."

Just like gay people reclaiming the word "queer."  I say, yes!

I don't mind being called fat, as long as it's said in a factual manner rather than in a sneering way. I'm fat, I'm middle-aged, I'm medium height, I have long hair. All of these things are simple facts. None of them is "good" or "bad."
I do despise the word "obese." It's such an awful word. It implies "unhealthy." I am a healthy fat person. I have fibromyalgia so I do have to choose my workouts a little more carefully lest I feel like I've been run over by a truck for a week, but I do my own aqua aerobic workouts in the therapy pool at work, and I walk a LOT on my job. I do not have type II diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease. And in my line of work (caring for the elderly) I notice that these diseases occur equally as often in slender or average weight individuals. Ergo, they are primarily AGE RELATED diseases, in my opinion.
Larger people are more prone to arthritis in the lower extremities. Very slender people are more prone to problems with osteoporosis. Everyone has certain issues. But it should not be automatically assumed that a large person is unhealthy or that he or she doesn't exercise.

Do Ten Year Olds Know Right From Wrong?

A post on the Dreamin Demon about a couple of little turds who used the excuse that they "saw it on You Tube" to torture dogs.

My response: It is true that the so called adults in this situation totally failed. But I knew people when I was growing up that were pretty much left to fend for themselves, and they never would have done this kind of thing. They "saw it on you tube" is not an excuse. I saw that horrific video on you tube where the so called soldier threw that helpless puppy off a bridge (and now he dares to cry about people hating on him.) It did not inspire me to throw a puppy off a bridge, although if this insult to the Marines was ever standing on a bridge and I knew I could get away with it, I would gladly push him off. I have also seen scantily clad females shaking their money maker on you tube. It did not inspire me to whip out a web cam, stick my ass in it, and post the results on you tube. When I was ten years old I did some naughty things (no, none of them included harming animals) such as pissing on a disliked neighbor's lawn and filling condoms with mayonnaise and sticking them on people's door knobs. However, I was aware that these activities were considered no-no's and there were consequences should I be caught. A ten year old does have the capacity to gauge right and wrong.

The Severely Mentally Ill Free in Society

User WryBread points out on a post at the Dreamin' Demon about a real cold-hearted one (wife claims he was mentally ill) that drowned his six month old infant:

Nowadays it's HARD to obtain help for the mentally ill. Just getting on a wait list is a big step forward. We need long-term residential care for the mentally ill, but Reagan ended that in the 1980s with the help of health-care "professionals" who thought that having the mentally ill living among us was going to be a happy situation. Then when you get the help, the staff sends them home without notice, changes their meds capriciously, and when the # of days on your insurance is up, home they come or they go to a much worse place.

Here is my thoughts: The majority of people with mental illness do not have to be institutionalized, but there are some that do. It is very difficult to get these individuals into a safe situation. Yeah--thanks, Ronnie! And for those that aren't dangerous, some are still unable to hold a job, and are forced to live in awful conditions. Myself, I am able to hold a job but I am marginalized. I can't pay for counseling. I just fly by the seat of my pants.

Just in case y'all didn't know, PVC's suck. (That's pre-ventricular complex, not polyvinyl chloride.) Feels like heart's leaping out of body

Meds are NOT One Size Fits All

In a discussion on a post at The Dreamin' Demon, we bantered about medications and why people quit taking them.

Nobigwhoopdawg says:

Not to mention that the body eventually builds a tolerance to the medications, and they have to be adjusted frequently. And even if by chance you do start feeling weird/crazy, getting in to see a shrink for an adjustment can be a hassle. I know where I live, there's one mental health center, and the last time I was in crisis mode, the wait was nine months to see a prescribing doctor, and a month and a half just to get a talk therapist. I ended up going to my regular doctor to get something to take the edge off.

Er, excuse my oversharing. I'll get a towel and clean that up.
Here is my response:
I have type II bipolar disorder. Normally I'm nowhere close to psychotic, but guess what--antidepressants make me psychotic. Not dangerously so, but I scared the bejeezus out of my son when he was thirteen and the doctor had put me on Effexor and I jumped up on the counter and started preaching. I had been misdiagnosed as having depression/anxiety until I was 38 years old because type II is sneaky--we don't get full manias. I tend to go into severe depressions so people tell me I need an antidepressant, but, no thanks. You hear my account of what Effexor did. Zoloft was like an acid trip. I literally "felt" my brain trying to claw its way out of my head. All I'm able to take is Lithium, which takes the edge off the irritability and paranoia that tends to happen during hypomanias and mixed episodes.
There used to be a wonderful fellow who lived in my town whose mission was to keep the town clean. You could see him at all hours picking up trash around the town. He was paranoid schizophrenic, but he so hated the side effects of his meds that he simply learned to live with his symptoms. Unfortunately, he was hit by a car (driven by a woman with Alzheimer's, of all things, whose meds had made her drowsy) and died. This was a couple of years back. He is missed.

How the American Medical System Fails Seriously Ill Psych Patients

This was my response to a post at the Dreamin' Demon regarding a seriously psychologically ill and dangerous man who tried to circumcise his eleven month old son.

Commenter "Lizard" says: It seems to be common among those with serious psychiatric problems that they stop taking their meds. Why? My impression is that (a) the meds make them feel like they're "just fine," so they think they don't need the meds any more and (b) the meds have serious side effects that would dissuade about anyone from voluntarily taking them on a regular basis.
The Cheese says: Another problem is that he was released. Our medical system fails people with serious psychiatric problems (and less serious psychiatric problems, and non-psychiatric medical issues...) There was a case here in Denver some 15-20 years ago where a man checked himself into the state hospital, telling them "keep me here, or I'm going to do something bad." But he had no insurance. So they released him. Lo and behold, he raped a woman and set her on fire.
This man should not have been released in the first place.
The majority of people with mental illness are not dangerous to others. Statistically, approximately one-third of mentally ill individuals total present a danger. Most people with mental illness are not, in fact, "insane." They are cognizant of reality and possess impulse control. Individuals such as this, however, fall well outside that category.
My grandmother worked in the state hospital in New York for her entire working life. She knew the patients better than the doctors who saw them once a week. Yet they wouldn't listen to her because she was "just an orderly." Sure enough, one patient she pleaded with them not to release went back out into society and knifed a couple of people to death.
